Year of Prayer

In 2025, the Church will celebrate her Jubilee, which is celebrate every 25 years. To prepare for this wonderful event, Pope Francis has initiated a Year of Prayer for 2024, to make the year preceding the Jubilee “a great ‘symphony’ of prayer”.

To help you celebrate this Year of Prayer, we have gathered together CTS’ vast collection of resources on prayer. How to Pray

There are many ways of praying. You can enjoy exploring them, but the choice might drive you crazy. It’s like being trapped in Tesco because you can’t decide which breakfast cereal to buy. The supermarket aisle stretches into the middle distance. Each box offers some magical, life-changing experience. What if you pick the wrong one?

If you don’t know where to start, here are some simple ideas. The focus here is on personal prayer, but praying with others can be equally important. It helps, if possible, to set aside a certain time each day for personal prayer. Mornings are best for most people, but evenings can work too. It might mean setting the alarm a few minutes earlier or cutting down on the TV or the social media before going to bed.

It’s not always easy. Things get in the way. You might notice an inner resistance. A long list of excuses begins to appear. For some reason it’s hard to give time to God. But it can make a real difference.

How to Pray the Rosary More Often

People often ask me how best to pray the Rosary, or they tell me that they’ve struggled with the Rosary and find it difficult. And some have thus given up on the Rosary. My own experience has also been one of struggle with the Rosary, and my mind wanders, I get distracted, or I find myself just going through the paces but not really concentrating on the meditation. 

However, I find that having sacred art before my eyes does focus my mind. Nowhere is this more apparent to me than in my own Rosary Shrine church in London, where each mystery of the Dominican Rosary is depicted in sculpture or stained glass. As I walk from one Rosary Chapel to the next, slowly praying the ‘Hail Marys’ I enter these distinct chapels dedicated to each of the mysteries, and it is as though I am entering the mystery itself, and as I gaze on the sculpted tableaux, I find myself interacting with the art, the imagination is engaged, and the scenes come to life in my mind’s eye. This engagement of intellect and imagination is vital, it seems to me, when we meditate on the Rosary, and my hope is that this book [Mysteries Made Visible – click here] can guide us in doing so. Occasionally, music can also help to focus the mind.
