St John Henry Newman: A New Doctor of the Church
Celebrate St John Henry Newman becoming Doctor of the Church with three new books and a special offer!
On Saturday 1st November, just eight years after his canonisation, Pope Leo XIV declared St John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church! This makes him the second English Doctor of the Church after St Bede the Venerable.
What is a Doctor of the Church?
Have you ever wondered why certain saints are called Doctors of the Church? It’s not because they held university degrees, but because through their writings and example, they have helped the whole Church understand the truth of the Faith more deeply.
A Doctor of the Church is a saint recognised for great holiness, faithful teaching, and deep insight into the mysteries of God. Their words stand the test of time, guiding us in how to think, pray, and live as Catholics.
To be named a Doctor, a saint must already be canonised, their teaching must be in full harmony with the Faith, and the Pope must formally declare them a Doctor of the Church.
St John Henry Newman becomes the 38th Doctor of the Church, with other notable Doctors including St Augustine, St Thomas Aquinas, St Teresa of Ávila, and St Thérèse of Lisieux – each showing, in their own way, how the truth of Christ can shape every mind and heart that seeks Him.
