Write for CTS on Substack

Are you a budding or professional writer who wants to help us in our mission to help people grow in the Catholic faith? Would you like to get your name and your writing our there to a ready-made audience? We’d love for you to submit an article or pitch an idea you’d like to write for Living Catholic Truth.

Here’s some important information to know first:

General Submission Guidelines

  1. We are looking for 1000-1500-word essays which are relatable and helpful for the everyday Catholic looking to grow in their Catholic faith.
  2. We do not accept AI-generated content, in whole or in part. You may use AI tools to assist you with spelling and grammar, such as Grammarly, but no part of the article may be generated by AI.
  3. Any submissions must be ready to post. We only make light edits, so please don’t send it unless you think it’s ready to publish.
  4. We do not accept posts that have been published elsewhere, except on your own personal Substack or blog.
  5. We don’t offer payment for articles that aren’t commissioned by us. That means if you’re pitching an idea or submitting an article, you’re doing so for the love of our mission and/or for the sake of gaining experience and exposure. All articles are shared not only with our Substack subscribers, but also with CTS email subscribers, social media followers and subscribers to our WhatsApp channel. Collectively, that’s over 50,000 people who might see your work.
  6. Please familiarise yourself with our posts before submitting. Get a feel for what we’re doing on Substack and what might be missing. Not every Catholic article would be a good fit for Living Catholic Truth.
  7. It should go without saying, but we won’t publish anything that contradicts the teachings of the Catholic Church, speaks negatively of the Pope, the Vatican or anyone else or intentionally and unnecessarily courts controversy. We don’t publish clickbait or ragebait.
  8. After submitting, please give us time to read your submission. We currently only have one team member reviewing Substack submissions, so please be patient and don’t send follow-up emails. Your submission is not guaranteed to be accepted, but we will do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.

Writing Guidelines

  1. Please submit your documents in .doc or .docx format.
  2. Where citing the Catechism, Scripture or a Vatican Document, please include your citation inline with the text rather than in footnotes.
  3. Capitalise “He”, “Him”, and “His” when referring to God.
  4. Language and Style: Use British English (e.g. organise, labour, centre, and St or Bl instead of St. or Bl.) and double quotation marks.
  5. Formatting: Use clear headings throughout to break up the text and signpost the key points. We prefer that each heading should have at least two paragraphs.
  6. Citations & Quotes: Keep citations simple and inline rather than using footnotes:
    • For Scripture: (Matt 5:8).
    • For Church documents:
      • In the first instance (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1234) or (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium 7), with the title of the document italicised.
      • After the first instance, they should be abbreviated (CCC 1234) or (EG7)
    • Please verify the accuracy of all quotes (especially when taken from AI) with the source material
  7. Title and Images: We’re happy for you to suggest a title and images that could be used either as the main image or throughout. However, we may decide that another title would work better, or we may change the title after publishing. If you’d like to include images, they must be either created by you, in the public domain or free to use under Creative Commons licences. AI images will of course not be used.
