About the Novena

The modern feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus derives mainly from a series of visions experienced by a French nun, St Margaret Mary Alacocque, in the latter part of the seventeenth century. Her visions included a series of twelve “promises” made concerning the graces that would be given to those who practised devotion to Jesus under this aspect. Her near contemporary, the French priest St John Eudes, also wrote much on this devotion.

The feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated on the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost (the first Sunday after Pentecost is always Trinity Sunday; the second, in many places including England & Wales, is the feast of Corpus Christi). This means a novena, to end on the feast itself, should begin on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday; or to end on the eve of the feast, the Wednesday after Trinity Sunday.

St John Eudes taught that Jesus is at the centre of everything and his love, his heart, holds us all. He also saw how much Jesus’s mother’s love helps us. He wrote: “So closely are Jesus and Mary bound up with each other that whoever beholds Jesus sees Mary; whoever loves Jesus, loves Mary; whoever has devotion to Jesus, has devotion to Mary.”

Lord, may I come to know your love for me and also the help of your Blessed Mother in all the difficulties of my life. Help me to know how to live a life devoted to you and to find the peace only you can give.
